Claremont is best known as a California college town, home to seven higher education institutes and a large number of residents with doctorates. The city is unofficially known as 'the City of Trees and PhDs.' It is nestled at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains and is lined with trees and historic buildings. In 2007, CNN/Money magazine named it the fifth best place to live in the United States, it was also the highest rated city in California on the list. The colleges in Claremont are consistently rated some of the best in the nation year after year, helping to draw students from around the world to the campuses. The foothills of Claremont are also home to the historic Padua Hills Theatre, constructed in 1930. The trees that line the streets of Claremont, have helped to win the city the National Arbor Day Association's Tree City USA award for the past 22 years. The trees were first planted by residents back in 1907 when the city was first incorporated, and the city is one of the only places in the country with American Elm trees that have not been exposed to Dutch Elm Disease, a fungal disease spread by elm bark beetles. Most of the social aspects of Claremont are found in The Claremont Village. An area of shops and restaurants, recently expanded in 2008 even hosts an art museum. The area that houses The Village was originally a citrus packing plant until its transformation into a social haven. The higher education facilities in Claremont all work together as one major college system. These school include Pomona College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, Keck Graduate Institute, Scripps College, Pitzer College and Claremont Graduate University. These institutions are private and are host to about 5,000 students every year coming from all around the world.
